Everybody did such a good job contributing to this documentary, and Gorillaz over the past years as a whole, and I cant wait to see whats in store for Gorillazs love and happy holidays. Producer and A&R executive Remi Kabaka Jr. began collaborating with the band in 2011 and was listed as an official member alongside Albarn and Hewlett in the 2019 Gorillaz documentary Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. [1] The band primarily consists of four animated members: Stuart "2-D" Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. Their fictional universe is presented in music videos, interviews and short cartoons. In reality, Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor, and often collaborates with other musicians. With Gorillaz, Albarn departed from the distinct Britpop of his band Blur through hip hop, electronic music, and world music through an "eccentrically postmodern " approach. [2] The band's 2001 debut album Gorillaz went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe and earned the group an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. [3] It was nominated for the Mercury Prize, but the nomination was withdrawn at the band's request. [4] Their second studio album, Demon Days (2005), went six times platinum in the UK [5] and double platinum in the US. [6] [7] [8] The third Gorillaz studio album, Plastic Beach, was released on 3 March 2010. The fourth, The Fall, was released on 25 December 2010 as a surprise gift for paying fan club members, then on 18 April 2011 as an official release. The fifth, Humanz, was released after a six-year hiatus on 28 April 2017. [9] Their sixth studio album, The Now Now, was released on 29 June 2018. [10] Gorillaz have won one Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, an NME Award and three MTV Europe Music Awards. [11] They have been nominated for ten Brit Awards, and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. [12] [13] By 2010, Gorillaz had sold over 20 million records worldwide. [14] History [ edit] Creation (1990–1999) [ edit] Musician Damon Albarn and comic creator Jamie Hewlett met in 1990 when guitarist Graham Coxon, a fan of Hewlett's work, asked him to interview Blur, a band Albarn and Coxon had recently formed. [15] The interview was published in Deadline magazine, home of Hewlett's comic strip Tank Girl. Hewlett initially thought Albarn was "arsey, a wanker"; despite becoming acquaintances with the band, they often did not get on, especially after Hewlett began seeing Coxon's ex-girlfriend Jane Olliver. [15] Despite this, Albarn and Hewlett started sharing a flat on Westbourne Grove in London in 1997. [16] Hewlett had recently broken up with Olliver and Albarn was at the end of his highly publicised relationship with Justine Frischmann of Elastica. [15] The idea to create Gorillaz came about when Albarn and Hewlett were watching MTV. Hewlett said, "If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell – there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a virtual band, something that would be a comment on that. " [17] The band originally identified themselves as "Gorilla" and the first song they recorded was "Ghost Train", [18] which was later released as a B-side on their single " Rock the House " and the B-side compilation G Sides. The musicians behind Gorillaz' first incarnation included Albarn, Del the Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala, who had previously worked together on the track "Time Keeps on Slipping" for Deltron 3030 's eponymous debut album. [19] Although not released under the Gorillaz name, Albarn has said that "one of the first ever Gorillaz tunes" was Blur 's 1997 single " On Your Own ", which was released for their fifth studio album Blur. [20] Gorillaz (2000–03) [ edit] The band's first release was the EP Tomorrow Comes Today, released on 27 November 2000. The band's first single was " Clint Eastwood " and was released on 5 March 2001. It was produced by hip hop producer Dan the Automator and originally featured UK rap group Phi Life Cypher, but the version that appears on the album features American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, [21] known on the album as Del tha' Ghost Rapper, a spirit in the band's drummer Russel Hobbs. [22] The Phi Life Cypher version of "Clint Eastwood" appears on the B-side album G Sides. On 26 March 2001, their first full-length album, the self-titled Gorillaz, was released, producing four singles: " Clint Eastwood ", " 19-2000 ", " Rock the House ", and " Tomorrow Comes Today ". In June 2001, "19–2000" a remix of the song was used as the title theme for EA Sports FIFA video game FIFA Football 2002. [23] On 7 December, the song " 911 " was released, a collaboration between Gorillaz and hip hop group D12 (without Eminem) and Terry Hall about the September 11 attacks. [24] Meanwhile, G Sides, a compilation of the B-sides from the Tomorrow Comes Today EP and first three singles, was released in Japan on 12 December. Gorillaz performed at the 2002 Brit Awards in London on 22 February, appearing in 3D animation on four large screens along with rap accompaniment by Phi Life Cypher. The band were nominated for four Brit Awards, including Best British Group, Best British Album and British Breakthrough Act, [25] but did not win any awards. [26] On 1 July 2002, a remix album titled Laika Come Home by Spacemonkeyz vs. Gorillaz was released. It contains most of the songs from the Gorillaz' first album, Gorillaz, but remixed in dub and reggae style. [27] On 18 November, a DVD titled Phase One: Celebrity Take Down was released. The DVD contains four promotional videos, the abandoned video for " 5/4 ", the Charts of Darkness documentary, the five Gorilla Bitez (comedic shorts starring the virtual characters), a tour of the website by the MEL 9000 server and more. The DVD's menu was designed much like the band's website and depicts an abandoned Kong Studios. [28] Rumours were circulating at this time that the Gorillaz team were busy preparing a film, but Hewlett said that the film project had been abandoned: "We lost all interest in doing it as soon as we started meeting with studios and talking to these Hollywood executive types, we just weren't on the same page. We said, fuck it, we'll sit on the idea until we can do it ourselves, and maybe even raise the money ourselves. " [29] Demon Days (2004–06) [ edit] The album Demon Days was released on 11 May 2005. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. [30] The third single was " Dirty Harry ", which had been released as a promotional single earlier that year. It was released in the United Kingdom on 21 November. The fourth and final single was the double A-side, " Kids with Guns " / " El Mañana ". It was released in the UK on 10 April 2006. [31] In December 2005, Demon Days had sold over a million copies in the UK, making it the UK's fifth best selling album of 2005. [32] Demon Days has since gone six times platinum in the UK, [5] double platinum in the United States, [6] triple platinum in Australia [33] and has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. [34] At the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami on 28 August, Gorillaz won two awards for " Feel Good Inc. " featuring De La Soul, including the award for Breakthrough Video. [35] Gorillaz performed "Dirty Harry" at the 2006 Brit Awards in London, and the band were nominated for Best British Group, and Best British Album ( Demon Days). [13] Plans were unveiled for Gorillaz to go on a "holographic" world tour in 2007 and 2008. [36] The virtual members would be shown as virtual characters on stage using Musion Eyeliner technology, giving them a lifelike appearance on stage. The virtual characters were first used at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards on 3 November, [37] and again at the 2006 Grammy Awards, on 8 February 2006 with the addition of Madonna, where the band played a pre-recorded version of "Feel Good Inc. " [38] All the Kidrobot figures that were released. The black set, red set, special " Dare " Noodle, four-color set, white set and two-tone set During 16 October–2 November, a set of Gorillaz figures were released by Kidrobot to coincide with the release of Demon Days. Two variations of the set were released, known as the Red and Black editions, and a limited edition Noodle from the music video for " Dare " was also released. [39] Three new sets of Gorillaz vinyl figures were released in 2006. The basic set which was limited to 60, 000 was the two-tone set limited to 1, 000 and the white edition which was limited to 4, 000 were released. [40] On 26 October, the Gorillaz autobiography titled Rise of the Ogre by Riverhead Books, [41] was released on UK. [42] 2 November 2006 on US. On 30 October, the Phase Two: Slowboat to Hades DVD was released on UK. 25 October in Japan. 31 October in the US. And 11 November in Australia. It contains the most of the materials released by Gorillaz from 2004 to 2006. The MTV EMAs, Grammys and Brits live performances. Also included is the Gorillaz' MTV Cribs episode, the Phase Two Gorillaz bites, a new Kong Studios guide, a gallery, and short interviews. On 2 June 2006 the hopes for a Gorillaz film were revived, when Hewlett stated that they would be producing the film on their own. Film producer and The Weinstein Company co-chairman, Harvey Weinstein, was said to be in talks with Albarn and Hewlett. [43] In a September 2006 interview with Uncut magazine, Albarn was said that the band "has been a fantastic journey which isn't over, because we're making a film. We've got Terry Gilliam involved. But as far as being in a big band and putting pop music out there, it's finished. We won't be doing that any more. " [44] On 19 November 2007, a compilation album titled D-Sides was released. It contains B-sides and remixes from singles and bonus tracks for the band's second studio album Demon Days, as well as previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same sessions. [45] [46] Only one video out in 8 December 2004, " Rockit (or "Rock It"). [47] On 20 April 2009, a documentary titled Bananaz, was released on PAL / Region 0 DVD format. It contains the documentary film, directed by Ceri Levy, documents the previous seven years of the band. [48] The film was released online on the Babelgum website on 20 April 2009 followed by the DVD release on 1 June 2009. [49] Plastic Beach and The Fall (2007–13) [ edit] In late 2007, Albarn and Hewlett began working on Carousel, a new Gorillaz project which eventually evolved into the band's third studio album Plastic Beach. [50] [51] Albarn said "I'm making this the biggest and most pop record I've ever made in many ways, but with all my experience to try and at least present something that has got depth. " [51] The album features guest performances by Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Gruff Rhys, Mark E. Smith, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Kano, Bashy, De La Soul, Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, sinfonia ViVA, and the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music. [51] [52] [53] On 18 January 2010, it was announced that Gorillaz would be headlining the final night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on 18 April 2010. [54] The first single from the album, " Stylo ", featuring Bobby Womack and Mos Def was made available for download 26 January 2010. [55] In October 2010, Albarn announced to the media that he would not let the cast of Glee cover the band's songs, claiming that the music on the Fox network's TV show is a "very poor substitute for the real thing". This statement led most people to believe that Gorillaz had been asked by Glee producers to lend their music to the show, which they had not. Albarn responded to the confusion with a laugh and said "and now they definitely won't. " [56] On 5 October 2010, Gorillaz announced their new single " Doncamatic " featuring Daley. [57] On 8 December 2010, Albarn confirmed that a Gorillaz album recorded on the American leg of the Escape to Plastic Beach tour would be released to download for free exclusively to paying fan club members from the Gorillaz website on Christmas Day, 25 December 2010. [58] The video for " Phoner to Arizona " was released on Gorillaz' website for free on 24 December, and a day later, their new album was released, entitled The Fall. [59] On 18 April 2011, Gorillaz announced the release of their own version of the iPad app iElectribe, by Korg – which features loops and samples taken from The Fall as well as other samples. The new version features a Gorillaz designed and styled interface, and is customised to generate Gorillaz samples from their album The Fall and includes 128 new sounds created by the band and 64 ready-to-use pre-programmed patterns from Gorillaz, Stephen Sedgwick (Gorillaz' engineer) and Korg. The app was based on Korg's Electribe: R device app. [60] [61] On 5 October 2011, Gorillaz released their first "greatest hits" compilation, The Singles Collection 2001–2011. [62] On 9 February 2012, Gorillaz announced " DoYaThing ", a single to promote the Gorillaz-branded Converse shoes that were soon to be released. The song would be part of Converse's "Three Artists, One Song" projects, with the two collaborators being James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and André 3000 of Outkast. An explicit, 13-minute-long version of the song became available for listening shortly after on Hewlett returned to direct the single's music video, featuring animated versions of the two collaborators on the track. [63] In April 2012, Albarn told The Guardian that he and Hewlett had fallen out and that future Gorillaz projects were "unlikely". [64] Tension between the two had been building, partly due to a belief held by Hewlett that his contributions to Gorillaz were being diminished. Speaking to The Guardian in April 2017, Hewlett explained: "Damon had half the Clash on stage, and Bobby Womack and Mos Def and De La Soul, and fucking Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Bashy and everyone else. It was the greatest band ever. And the screen on stage behind them seemed to get smaller every day. I’d say, ‘Have we got a new screen? ’ and the tour manager was like, ‘No, it’s the same screen. ’ Because it seemed to me like it was getting smaller. " [65] On 25 April 2012, in an interview with Metro, Albarn was more optimistic about Gorillaz' future, saying that once he had worked out his differences with Hewlett, he was sure that they would make another record. [66] On 24 June 2013, Hewlett stated that he and Albarn planned to someday record a follow-up to their 2010 album Plastic Beach. [67] [68] Humanz (2014–17) [ edit] In April 2014, Albarn told the National Post that he "wouldn't mind having another stab at a Gorillaz record. " [69] Two months later he reported that he had "been writing quite a lot of songs on the road for Gorillaz". [70] On 19 October 2014, Albarn told The Sydney Morning Herald that he was planning to release new Gorillaz material in 2016. [71] Albarn has described the music that he has written for the next Gorillaz album as being very upbeat, humorous, and positive, stating that he plans on giving the tracks "a benchmark of 125 bpm and nothing underneath that", while also suggesting that it once again may have many collaborations. [72] [73] [74] On 16 July 2015, Albarn stated during an interview for ABC's 7. 30 in Australia that he would begin work on the next Gorillaz album: "I'm starting recording in September for a new Gorillaz record, I've just been really, really busy so I haven't had a chance. I'd love to just get back in to that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week. " [75] Speaking about his relationship with Hewlett, Albarn said that the pair's well-publicized fall-out has helped their relationship in the long term. [76] In October 2015, Albarn revealed to Rolling Stone that he and Hewlett were working on a new Gorillaz album. [77] In April 2016, Hewlett uploaded two video clips onto his Instagram showing the continued work on the album. The first clip featured Liam Bailey and rumoured executive producer on the album The Twilite Tone. The second clip was a time-lapse video featuring Albarn, Bailey, The Twilite Tone and Jean-Michel Jarre. [78] [79] [80] On 17 May 2016, Gorillaz were in the studio with Chicago-based hip hop artist Vic Mensa. [81] [82] [83] [84] On 20 September 2016, Gorillaz began an abridged retrospective timeline of the history of Gorillaz releases since 2000. [85] [86] [87] On 3 October 2016, Gorillaz began posting a series of interactive multimedia stories revolving around the fictional lives of each Gorillaz character since their hiatus to their social media profiles, beginning with The Book of Noodle (she ended up in Japan and tracked down a demon crime boss), then The Book of Russel (he was still a giant from the storyline of Plastic Beach, where he washed up on the shores of North Korea and starved so much he shrank back to normal size), then The Book of Murdoc (he was captured by the band's record label EMI at sea and told to make another album), and finishing with The Book of 2-D (he was swallowed by a whale named Massive Dick on Plastic Beach, and washed up on the shores of Mexico, where to survive he had to eat the whale's blubber, but it turned out he was just at an empty part of Cabo San Lucas). [88] Gorillaz (with Albarn to the left) on stage at the Brixton Academy in London, June 2017 On 8 October 2016, Noodle was given her own Instagram page and was announced to be the Global Ambassador of Jaguar Racing. [89] On 19 January 2017, a new song from the band entitled " Hallelujah Money " featuring Benjamin Clementine was released. [90] [91] On 6 March, Gorillaz announced the launch of their own festival, called Demon Dayz Festival, which took place on 10 June 2017 at Dreamland Margate in Margate, Kent, England. [92] [93] [94] The band headlined the festival. [95] On 17 March 2017, the tracklist of the forthcoming album was leaked online, showing guest features from a variety of artists including usual collaborators De La Soul, as well as new collaborators such as Grace Jones, Vince Staples, Pusha T, Rag'n'Bone Man, Anthony Hamilton, Kilo Kish and Kali Uchis. [96] [97] [98] On 23 March 2017, Gorillaz announced via Instagram that the new album will be entitled Humanz, with a scheduled release date of 28 April 2017. [99] On the official Gorillaz YouTube page, two new music videos were released for their track " Saturnz Barz ", one of which was in a 360º view. The track features vocals from Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan. The band also released an art video for the track " Andromeda ", featuring an animated planet in a galaxy. The track features the American rapper D. R. A. M., two more art videos were released: " Ascension " (featuring American rapper Vince Staples) and " We Got the Power " (featuring Jehnny Beth of the English rock band Savages and Noel Gallagher of Oasis). [100] On 6 April 2017, the fifth single from Humanz, " Let Me Out " (featuring Mavis Staples and Pusha T), was released, followed by a performance of the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on 27 April. [101] On 10 April 2017, a Gorillaz themed augmented reality app created in collaboration with Electronic Beats was released. On 24 April 2017, four days before the Humanz release date, another promotional single was uploaded, titled "The Apprentice". It is the only new song taken from the deluxe edition of Humanz. On 28 April 2017, Humanz was released worldwide. On 8 June 2017, the non-album single " Sleeping Powder " was released, along with an accompanying music video. On 10 June 2017, the band headlined the Demon Dayz Festival in Margate, England. On 4 August 2017 the band released " Strobelite " as a single with an accompanying music video. [102] On 31 October 2017, "Garage Palace" was released as a single from the "Super Deluxe" Edition of Humanz, which includes 14 additional songs and was released on 3 November 2017. [103] [104] [105] In December 2017, the band released a Humanz -themed, in-universe magazine called G Magazine. [106] On 21 February 2018, the band received the Brit Award for British Group for their work on Humanz. During their acceptance speech, a short-video of Murdoc was played, showing him being imprisoned for an unknown reason. [107] The Now Now (2018–19) [ edit] In an interview with Q Magazine in September 2017, Albarn hinted at another potential Gorillaz album being in production. He mentioned enjoying the spontaneity of recording and debuting music while on tour, similarly to the band's 2010 release The Fall, but expressed desire to make it a comparatively more "complete" record, adding that "If we're going to do more with Gorillaz we don't want to wait seven years because, y'know, we're getting on a bit now". [108] At the end of the same month on 30 September 2017 while touring for Humanz, the band debuted a new song in Seattle called "Idaho". Hewlett confirmed later on in December 2017 that the band planned to release a follow-up album to Humanz in 2018, citing a desire to keep the band going rather than take any prolonged breaks as the band had usually done with previous projects. Hewlett described several of the demos and new material as a "new direction" for the band, stating that he hopes to move the band's artwork in a similar direction. [109] During a performance in Chile on the final leg of the Humanz Tour, Albarn confirmed that the new album was coming "very soon" and premiered a new song called " Hollywood " featuring Jamie Principle and Snoop Dogg. [110] On 26 May 2018, the album was officially announced to be titled The Now Now, being co-produced by James Ford. [111] [112] On 31 May, the music video for the single " Humility " featuring George Benson, was released alongside "Lake Zurich". [113] From 7 to 21 June, the band released the singles "Sorcererz", "Fire Flies", and "Hollywood". [114] [115] [116] The Now Now was released on 29 June 2018. On 13 September, " Tranz " was released as a single along with a music video. [117] All of the songs from the album have a visualizer except "Humility". In the fictional Gorillaz storyline, the band introduced Ace from Cartoon Network 's animated series The Powerpuff Girls as a temporary bassist of the band, filling in for the imprisoned Murdoc Niccals (as seen in the band's Brit Awards acceptance speech for Humanz). [118] From 4 June to 26 October 2018, the band ran a bi-weekly text-adventure ARG called "Free Murdoc", in which the player assists Murdoc as he attempts to escape from prison. [119] [120] [121] [122] Murdoc was reunited with the band on 20 September, in time to join them on the final leg of The Now Now Tour. [123] On 25 October, the band announced they would be partnering with G-Shock to create a line of Gorillaz watches. [124] To promote the watches, the band released a monthly web-series called Mission M101. [125] [126] On 21 November 2019, the band announced a documentary covering the production of Humanz and The Now Now and their accompanying tours titled Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. [127] It was released on 16 December via a worldwide theatrical screening. [128] Eight days later, an edited version of the documentary subtitled the "Director's Cut" was uploaded through the Gorillaz official YouTube page in three parts: Humanz, [129] Humanz World Tour [130] and The Now Now. [131] Song Machine (2020–present) [ edit] On January 28th, the band officially released images via social media teasing a concept entitled Song Machine. A 23-second promotional track entitled "Song Machine Theme Tune" was released on streaming services with an accompanying video. [132] The following day, further information was released regarding the project, revealing that new "episodes" would be released spontaneously throughout the year. [133] Each episode will feature previously unannounced guest musicians on new Gorillaz material, with the first being " Momentary Bliss ", which features both British rapper Slowthai and the Kent -based punk rock duo Slaves. [134] Upon the premiere of "Momentary Bliss", Albarn revealed that the group had been in the studio with ScHoolboy Q and Sampa the Great among others, although he did say that these songs were likely to be saved for future series of Song Machine. [135] The group also teased a collaboration with Australian band Tame Impala on Instagram. [136] Style [ edit] Writers and critics have variously described Gorillaz' music as alternative rock, [137] art pop, [138] hip hop, [139] pop, [140] trip hop, [141] dark pop, [142] alternative hip hop, [143] rap rock, [144] indie rock, [145] electronica, [2] bedroom pop, [146] dance-rock, [147] new wave, [148] funk [148] and worldbeat. [2] The band's aesthetic and general approach has been described as postmodern. [2] According to AllMusic Gorillaz blend Britpop and hip-hop, [149] while The Guardian described the band as "a sort of dub /hip-hop/ lo-fi indie/ world music hybrid". [150] According to PopMatters, the band's early work foreshadowed "the melding of hip-hop, rock, and electronic elements in pop music" that grew in significance in the next decade. [151] Live performances [ edit] Gorillaz performed Demon Days at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York in April 2006. In March 2001, Gorillaz played their first show at the Scala in London before embarking on a tour later that summer, with one date in Paris and two in Japan. The show, called Gorillaz Live, saw the live band playing behind a giant projector screen which covered the whole stage, on which was projected various visuals and images created by Hewlett. After taking a short break over the holidays, the tour resumed with a North American leg in February 2002. [152] In November 2005, Gorillaz performed Demon Days Live, a five night residency at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester, England in which the album Demon Days was presented in its entirety. The event was filmed by an EMI film crew for a DVD release, Demon Days Live, in late March 2006. It was later announced that an American version of the event would take place in April 2006 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Within an hour of release tickets were sold out. [153] The show of 6 April was filmed for a live webcast at MSN Video. [154] Palladia (then known as MHD) also broadcast an Apollo Theater show in HDTV on 31 December 2006. [155] Gorillaz performing at the Roundhouse in London, April 2010 In March 2010, Gorillaz began a short six date tour as "rehearsal" shows for their headlining slot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The shows were open exclusively to Gorillaz Sub Division fan club members and featured no visuals whatsoever. These performances were the band's first public performances in four years. Gorillaz headlined the final night of the Coachella Festival on 18 April 2010 as their first proper, full show. On 27 April they were the main guests on Later... with Jools Holland on the BBC. In addition, Gorillaz played a two-night residency at London's Camden Roundhouse (29 and 30 April 2010). Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash performed guitar and bass respectively with the band and more than once in the evening chords from the Clash song " Guns of Brixton " were heard as a subtle reference to their presence. [156] Gorillaz embarked on the Escape to Plastic Beach Tour in October 2010, with some concerts preceding festival dates in the summer, such as at the Byblos Festival in Lebanon, the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, headlining the Glastonbury Festival in England and one show at the Citadel of Damascus in Syria. [157] [158] The tour took them across North America in October, Europe in November, and finally through Australia, New Zealand, and with one date in Hong Kong in December. [159] During the final show of the tour at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on 21 December 2010, Albarn announced that it would be their final show with the Plastic Beach line up. [160] On 8 July 2017, Gorillaz embarked upon the Humanz Tour, the band's second world tour and first since 2010. With 53 scheduled shows and lasting over a year, it was Gorillaz' longest tour in their history. [161] On 6 December, Gorillaz announced they would be playing BoomTown Fair as an "exclusive one-off UK show". [162] After 53 performances, on 30 March 2018, Humanz Tour concluded in São Paulo, Brazil. [163] The tour was followed almost immediately by The Now Now Tour, starting in June 2018 in Nuremberg, Germany. On 20 October, Gorillaz played " Song 2 " by Blur, at the Demon Dayz Festival, with Graham Coxon, in Los Angeles, California. [164] After 29 performances, on 24 October, The Now Now Tour concluded, in Mexico City. [165] [166] The Now Now Tour had participations of The Internet and Little Dragon. The worm thing said: 👁 👄 _ 🙎🏻‍♀️. Gorillaz reject false icons movie. I t’s surprising, given the virtual pop-band conceit, that there wasn’t a full-length animated Gorillaz film years ago. But Reject False Icons, after Ceri Levy’s Bananaz from 2008, is the second “behind the scenes” documentary. It’s telling: Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel have slowly been overwhelmed in the course of the project’s two-decade history by its operational reality – which now verges on, as this film points out, 100 contributors. Making up for the fact that illustrator Jamie Hewlett’s gargoyle-ish ensemble are present only in flashy cutaways, his son Denholm gets to prowl behind the scenes on recording sessions for recent back-to-back albums Humanz and The Now Now, and the world tour that Damon Albarn ’s funky omnibus packed in around them. The downside of family involvement is that everything is strictly sanctioned. Albarn jokes in an after-credits scene about the directorial whippersnapper exposing all his “idiosyncrasities”. But they amount here to nothing more than being perpetually on muso cloud nine, orchestrating, among others, Mavis Staples, Little Simz, actor Ben Mendelsohn and one-time nemesis Noel Gallagher in the studio and on stage. Albarn’s capering, grufty mug and gold tooth make him resemble some mixing-desk Steptoe though, generally, he seems a lot happier than the self-regarding figure who sometimes appeared in Britpop documentaries. If there were personality clashes, we don’t see them, nor is there any inquiry into the band’s USP, the relationship between sound and image, or how Albarn corrals his collaborators. Hewlett opts for a nippy edit, never lingering on any vignette or performance. Which stops us savouring any single musical highlight – though Peven Everett, with his lightning-bolt vocals, has an energising effect, a more-than-able deputy for the late Bobby Womack. It’s ironic that the film doesn’t just reject false icons but, to some extent, the band’s cartoon avatars, too; in prioritising Gorillaz meatspace, it inadvertently confirms the marginalisation of the original concept. Still, with Hewlett Jr often chronicling events in cool monochrome, shooting in close proximity if not exactly total intimacy, this snappy scrapbook tips the hat to the infectious creativity of Albarn’s travelling circus. • Gorillaz: Reject False Icons is release on 16 December. • This article was amended on 18 December 2019. An earlier version misspelled the names of the Gorillaz members Murdoc and Russel as “Murdoch” and “Russell”.

Making its theatrical debut on March 12, 1988, Char's Counterattack is the culmination of the original saga begun in Mobile Suit Gundam and continued through Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, marking the final conflict of the fourteen-year rivalry between the characters Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. In addition to being the first original Gundam theatrical release, Char's Counterattack was also the first Gundam production to make use of computer graphics during a five-second shot of the Sweetwater colony rotating in space, being made at Toyo Links. Char's Counterattack was released in America on DVD on August 20, 2002 and was broadcast on January 4, 2003 on Adult Swim. Plot [ edit] In UC 0093 (2193 A. D. ), Char Aznable has returned to lead Neo Zeon. As the film opens, Char’s forces have arranged to drop the asteroid Fifth Luna on the Earth. Special task force Londo Bell, whose members include veteran soldiers Amuro Ray and Bright Noa, attempt to prevent the catastrophe. Char is successful and the asteroid crashes into Lhasa, Tibet. Earth Federation Prime Minister Adenaur Paraya and his teenage daughter Quess narrowly escape the crashing asteroid. Their space shuttle meets with Londo Bell’s command ship, the Ra Cailum, which has just finished collecting Amuro’s new mobile suit, the RX-93 Nu Gundam, and Amuro’s close friend Chan Agi. The Nu Gundam is equipped with new “psycho-frame” technology, which amplifies Newtype abilities. Bright is reunited with his young son Hathaway, who was also on the escaping shuttle. Adenaur instructs Bright to deliver him to the colony Londenion for some important business. While onboard, Quess becomes smitten with Amuro, and Hathaway develops a crush on Quess. On the Londenion colony, Adenaur’s business is revealed to be a secret meeting with Char and other Neo Zeon leaders to arrange a treaty; the Neo Zeon will gain the asteroid Axis in exchange for disarming their fleet. While relaxing on the colony with Quess and Hathaway, Amuro recognizes Char and confronts him. Overhearing the two men argue, Quess becomes enamored of Char’s philosophies and leaves the colony with him, much to Hathaway’s distress. Quess turns out to be a Newtype and a naturally talented mobile suit pilot. Char takes advantage of her unstable nature and manipulates her feelings to use her as a weapon against Amuro. Char reveals that the treaty with the Federation is a ruse. The Neo Zeon forces ambush the Federation fleet at the supposed disarmament, and Axis is sent on a collision course with the Earth. Londo Bell attempts to stop the asteroid using Axis’ stockpile of nuclear weapons, but only succeeds in splitting the asteroid into two pieces. A furious battle between Londo Bell, the Federation, and Neo Zeon erupts. Quess descends into madness and violence while piloting the psycho-frame-equipped mobile armor Alpha Azieru. Hathaway steals a mobile suit and futilely tries to convince Quess to stop fighting and come with him. Chan kills Quess to protect Hathaway from the girl’s insane attacks but is herself killed by Hathaway in a rage over Quess’s death. Amuro and Char duel in their psycho-frame mobile suits, the Nu Gundam and MSN-04 Sazabi, and Amuro defeats his long-time rival. With Char’s escape pod in tow, Amuro desperately attempts to push back the descending Axis asteroid, aided by Federation and Zeon suits alike. The power of the Nu Gundam’s psycho-frame amplifies Amuro’s Newtype abilities to an unbelievable level. Amuro, Char, and the Nu Gundam vanish in a massive flare of light as both halves of Axis are pushed away from the Earth. Production and development [ edit] Yoshiyuki Tomino adapted Char's Counterattack from the novel Hi-Streamer (which was published in two versions), and wrote Beltorchika's Children as an alternate version. Tomino had planned previously to feature Char's return in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, however when he got the green light to do Char's Counterattack, he dropped the planned appearance. Tomino does not recall his plans to bring back Char in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. [ citation needed] The Beltorchika's Children' s differences from the movie include Amuro and Char piloting advanced versions of the ν-Gundam and the Sazabi: the Hi-ν-Gundam and the MSN-04-II Nightingale, Z Gundam character Beltorchika Irma being pregnant with Amuro's child, Hathaway accidentally killing Quess instead of Chan, and the confirmed deaths of Amuro and Char. [2] The film made its American debut on August 20, 2002 on DVD and was later re-released during Sunrise's release of its One Year War properties (specifically Mobile Suit Gundam, 08th MS Team, 0080, and 0083). As part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Gundam franchise, Char's Counterattack played in select theaters in the U. S. on December 5, 2019. [3] Home media [ edit] Bandai released a DVD of the movie on August 20, 2002. [4] The product was a maroon slipcase edition embossed with the gold Neo Zeon logo. The DVD was later reissued as part of the Anime Legends line in 2006. Due to the closure of Bandai Entertainment, the movie has been out of print for sometime. On October 11, 2014 at their 2014 New York Comic-Con panel, Sunrise announced they will be releasing all of the Gundam franchise, including Gundam SEED: Special Edition in North America though distribution from Right Stuf Inc., beginning in Spring 2015. [5] By 2008, the film had sold 300, 000 units on DVD. [1] Game [ edit] Bandai produced a Char's Counterattack 3D fighting game for the PlayStation in 1998 as part of the Big Bang Project for Gundam's 20th anniversary. The game featured scenes from the film that were remade with updated animation and CGI. The game also has stages featuring Amuro and Char's classic encounters in the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. Toys/Models [ edit] A line of Gunpla models based on the movie's mobile suits was released, along with a Hobby Japan special. The model line had 1/144 kits of the Jegan, the Geara Doga, the Sazabi, [6] Gyunei Guss and Quess Paraya's Jagd Dogas, and the ν-Gundam (with or without Fin Funnel), a 1/550 α-Azieru, and a 1/100 ν-Gundam. Bandai would re-release them plus the Hi-ν-Gundam and a heavy weapons version of the ν-Gundam, years later as part of the HGUC and Master Grade lines, the latter being featured in Bandai's Gundam Weapons line of mooks (modelling books). Many of them are also available as part of the B-Club resin line. In 2011, a model kit manufacturer in China, MCModel, produced 1/144 scale kits of the ν-Gundam and Hi-ν-Gundam called "Gundooms" that are reportedly much more detailed than the same kits from Bandai based on their origins as retooled versions of resin conversion kits. Another company, Regulation Center, later followed suit with a 1/100 Nightingale kit. Bandai's special museum contained a 1/100 prototype of the Nightingale; the company went public at the 2014 Shizuoka Hobby Show with the announcement of a new RE/100 category of scale models, with the Nightingale as the first release in September 2014. [7] Veteran mechanical designer Hajime Katoki redesigned the MG version of the Sazabi, resulting in a slightly blockier appearance more suitable for modeling. [8] Due to the substantial size and heft, it is one of the most expensive 1/100th-scale Master Grade kits yet manufactured, trumped only by the enormous Perfect Zeong kit, released in 2004. [9] The ν-Gundam, Hi-ν-Gundam, and Sazabi would be released as part of Katoki's VerKA line of redesigned Gunpla model kits, their most noticeable design cues being splitting panels designed to show off the psycoframe in the Nu Gundam, and the internal frame structure in the Sazabi. The ν-Gundam and Sazabi [10] were the first offerings in Bandai's "Formania" line of extensively detailed machine busts in September 2010. Some of the movie's units were also released as action figures, with the RX-93 and the Sazabi produced in various forms, the latest of which being under the Robot Spirits line. Bandai, in particular, produced an online-exclusive RX-93 equipment set featuring a second set of Fin-Funnels [11] and a Fin-Funnel equipment set that includes effect parts to recreate the ν-Gundam's beam pyramid. [12] A version of the ν-Gundam produced for the Taiwanese market has a special psycho-frame effect where parts of the body are molded in crystal green. Bandai released the Hi-ν in early 2014 and is slated to release the unit as part of the Metal Robot Spirits line, a version of regular Robot Spirits figures with diecast metal parts. Wait, didn't Gundam Unicorn take place like 3 or 8 years after the events of Char's Counterattack. I havent watched any other Gundam shows except iron blooded orphans and don't know much about the older UC gundam shows, so please don't scold me. Sorry... Great job on the video! i really dig the remix of this know how u did it, but awsome! but one thing that bugs me about the dub is that when nanai calls out to char, she refer to him as will translate into 大尉 but actually she calls him 大佐 which will translate into colonel. but maybe its a navy term colonel sounds more appropriate. once again, the video is awsome. Why the creator of this anime seems love gudpla tch im still waiting for the new series like extension of blood orphan.

Johnston's books. Each one is completely different, in terms of both story and subgenre, but the thing that remains consistent is that the emotional lives of the characters are at the forefront of the story. While The Afterward is nominally fantasy, the fantasy action is really just the underlayer for the real story, which is about the emotional states of the characters including a f/f romance as a significant focal point. The story goes back and forth in time, so we see the I always enjoy E. The story goes back and forth in time, so we see the events that lead to the emotional aftermath, the changes wrought on the participants, and how the return to everyday life following completion of their quest subsequently affects them. Other things I enjoyed about this book includes the expansive diversity that Johnston always incorporates so well and in a positively natural way into her stories. In addition, gender equality is just a given here, and so an explanation of "why" the quest knights were all women isn't even an issue requiring explanation or justification within the story. This isn't a book that will necessarily appeal to someone looking for a lot of emphasis on action, but I think it will be enjoyed immensely by those who like to read about the feelings and inner workings of the characters. An aside, but relevant, is that I just really love E. Johnston. I know the characters in her books might struggle, sometimes severely, but I also know they will get to as good a place as they can by the end. I love the hopefulness that ultimately gets delivered by the end of each book and the potential for happiness that is always there... "an apprentice knight and a not-at-all reformed thief as they try to figure out what to do with their lives after they help save the world. " thanks for my life E. Johnston Feb 16, 2019 Silvia it was amazing Hello this is my new favorite fantasy f/f relationship!!! Please read this book Scream review to come Absolutely delightful. The Afterward is a queer fantasy that evokes series like The Belgariad and The Mallorean but puts a modern twist on them. I adored everything about this book. Jun 02, 2019 Acqua liked it Me and E. Johnston's writing just don't get along. It's not bad by any means, it's just that the narrative choices don't make any sense to me: in years of reading fantasy, I've never read a book that had at the same time this many infodumps and a worldbuilding as generic, inconsistent and lacking in details as The Afterward. Let's talk about what I mean: • generic: this book has a typical medieval fantasy aesthetic, with knights and kings and magical gems, which is fine, if not exactly my Me and E. Let's talk about what I mean: • generic: this book has a typical medieval fantasy aesthetic, with knights and kings and magical gems, which is fine, if not exactly my preference; • inconsistent: what sets it apart from many other fantasy books is that it has gender equality to a degree and less queerphobia, which would have been great if the book hadn't gone about it in an extremely inconsistent way, for example by telling us that the language shifted to include non-binary people but constantly using binarist phrasings - and since we're talking about the way things are phrased, some parts were really uncomfortable to read as an aromantic person; • lacking in details: the Mage Keep is the only place that was really described, and I have no idea how anything else looked like. It relied a lot on the idea that the reader could envision a generic medieval fantasy world, but that's both boring for me and lazy writing. I had a similar problem with That Inevitable Victorian Thing, so I think she's just not the author for me. Now, let's mostly focus on the positives, since this was, after all, a three star book - and three stars isn't a bad rating for me. The Afterward is a quietly subversive fantasy novel. It looks generic on the surface, and its world is, but what it does with the set-up isn't. Instead of having a group of men with the one woman™ go on a quest, it's a group of female knights (one of which is a trans woman) and thieves with only one man, and the story centers an f/f relationship between two young women of color. What it did with arranged marriage tropes was really interesting to see too, as it didn't approach it the way most YA fantasy novels do. I thought that The Afterward would be about what happens after the quest, but it isn't, not really - half of it is set during the before. I can't really complain about that, since those are the parts of the book in which we actually see the f/f couple instead of only hearing about it while the girls are separated. However, the quest itself wasn't that interesting to read about. And finally: the f/f romance. I loved Olsa and Kalanthe's dynamic, but they aren't in the same place for most of the book. Which is sad, because the scenes in which they were together were enough to make me at least believe in the romance, so I wonder how strongly I would have felt about it had it had more page time... Mar 26, 2019 Jessica A labor of love and an homage to those fantasy books of yore, especially David Eddings' Elenium! The book is, in fact, dedicated to David and his wife/co-author Leigh, which I found doubly precious. This is a story you might have heard before: about a group of brave nights, a thief and a mage, going on quest for a mysterious gem that could destroy the world... but it's also what happens after. What happens when you go home? When there are songs about you, but songs don't pay the rent? What A labor of love and an homage to those fantasy books of yore, especially David Eddings' Elenium! The book is, in fact, dedicated to David and his wife/co-author Leigh, which I found doubly precious. What happens when you go home? When there are songs about you, but songs don't pay the rent? What happens, from a practical standpoint if you fell in love on the quest, but your role in society demands you leave that love behind? I adore Kate, and her dedication to dealing even-handedly with elements of magic and practicality. What do lady knights on the road do about menstruation? What if holding the cursed gem kills you? What's the best way to wear your hair if you're putting a helmet over it? Do I have time to braid this magically poisonous spike into my hair before the battle? This is like, All the things you ever wanted to know about knights, quests, and sexuality but were afraid to ask! with bonus Star Wars references. And of course there are goats. And TWO references to Anakin's "I hate sand! " line from Attack of the Clones. Because it's Kate... I loved the concept for this story, of female knights and a thief going on a difficult and successful quest together, then having to continue with their lives after. I loved each of the women and their friendship. I even enjoyed much of the writing, even with some of the editing problems (occasional missing words and incorrect tense use), the way the past is 3rd person and the present is 1st person with 2 PoVs. But this book didn't end up as a 5 star read for me; not sure what was a little off I loved the concept for this story, of female knights and a thief going on a difficult and successful quest together, then having to continue with their lives after. But this book didn't end up as a 5 star read for me; not sure what was a little off for me in the story; perhaps it was that I found the action a little confusing in places. On a separate note, I can say that I really did not like the cover. That said, this is E. Johnston, and I like her work a lot generally, and I did like this book a lot... Plot The story is told from the two alternating POVs of Olsa Rhetsdaughter, a thief, and Kalanthe Ironheart, a knight in training. They are currently living “post-Quest” after saving the entire kingdom from an ancient evil, I really loved this idea for a story and it’s unique I just think it’s interesting to see what happens to the heroes after their quest is completed. The story is also told in two different timelines, Before and After the completion of the quest. I know it sounds kind of confusing but it really isn’t, it’s actually very easy to follow and really adds a lot to the plot being told this way. I personally LIVED for it! The focus of the story is mostly on Olsa and Kalanthe’s relationship as they try to conquer the obstacles they face and find their way back into each other’s lives. Normally I’m not super big into romance focused plot lines especially in YA Fantasy as they are usually full of tropes. However, I thought it was an adorable romance and the author did a fantastic job of adding in enough action, adventure, and world building to keep things lively. I would say this is moderately paced, never slow, and will definitely keep your attention. “The Afterward” takes place in a high fantasy world with moderate amounts of magic and a classical take on knights but with a more feminist twist, a TON of the knights are actually female in this world. I enjoyed the world and world building a lot and loved that it was simple yet intriguing. I have to say I’m definitely a little sad that this is a standalone because I would love to read more about this world Johnston created! Then just a little side note here that is about a seemingly random scene in the book but one that I feel is important to mention. I actually really liked that menstruation was mentioned and in a normal, healthy manner. Most books, especially fantasy, skip over this and if they do ever mention it, it’s usually in a……darker way. I just think it’s nice to see it mentioned like this and I think it’s important especially in the YA genre since the audience are teens/young adults. Overall I’d say this was excellently written, nothing ever felt too convenient, I was interested the entire time, and the ending wasn’t rushed or abrupt but rather perfect and satisfying. Characters This was very much a character driven book and while the story and plot held strong you can tell the characters are the real stars here. I couldn’t help but fall in love with every single one and that’s how I know I read a damn good book! Olsa and Kalanthe made for great main characters with their flaws that they learn to overcome and overall development throughout the story. Olsa has a bit of a temper and is stubborn but she’s smart and extremely brave. While Kalanthe is almost too good and honorable for her own good, she’s so kind and generous you can’t help but feel like she’s the most precious thing ever! There are also some fantastic side characters that I loved just as much as Olsa and Kalanthe and are their former companions on the Quest. Sir Erris, Sir Branthear, Sir Uleweya, Sir Terriam, and Mage Ladros. Honestly they all had a lot of depth and personality even if they didn’t have a lot of “page time” and I really loved each of them because of it. The cast of characters are also very diverse: Olsa, Kalanthe, and Uleweya all have dark skin though Kalanthe’s is described as being a bit lighter; there is a minor female character who wears a headscarf; Branthear is transgender; Terriam I believe is aromantic or asexual since she is described as not having romantic interest in men or women; Olsa is bisexual; and Kalanthe is gay. I think the author did a fantastic job of being inclusive and it’s very refreshing to see such diversity in YA Fantasy! Romance As I already mentioned this is a very romance focused book but in the best way possible! Olsa and Kalanthe are really fantastic together, though they have their differences. The way the story is told with the timeline jumping back and forth it’s hard to say if it was actually slow burn but I’d say it was, there definitely wasn’t any insta-love that’s for sure. I think it’s just a timeless romance where they strive to overcome obstacles to be together and I thought they were a cute couple! If you couldn’t tell already it is a F/F romance as well. In Conclusion What I Loved: Engaging story full of romance and adventure Interesting world building with magic and knights Evenly paced, never a dull moment Fantastic writing Menstruation mentioned in a positive, healthy manner Diverse cast featuring many different POC and LGTBQ+ characters Adorable F/F romance Characters full of depth and personality What I Didn’t Love: Honestly? Nothing. Recommend? I highly, highly recommend checking out “The Afterward” it’s honestly just such a fun read full of romance and adventure! The writing is nothing short of excellent and I think there’s something for every YA fantasy fan to enjoy here. Also if you’re looking for a fantasy book featuring POC and LGTBQ+ characters, look no further! ************************ Pre-Review Absolutely fantastic! I was so completely invested in these characters I'm a little sad it's all over, plus on top of that there are more than a few POC and LGTBQ+ characters and it's all about an F/F romance that I LIVED FOR!.. In theory, I love this book. I love that it’s a high fantasy with queer women and a fantastically diverse cast. But in reality, I’m just so bored reading it. I put this one down at over 50% through the book and I’ve been doing well this year at putting books down that I’m not loving. I skimmed a bit further to see if maybe it’d pick up and be worth continuing, but it didn’t. The plot is very slow and there isn’t a clear direction of where the story is going. As well as the perspectives switch up In theory, I love this book. As well as the perspectives switch up quite a bit and made it harder to get invested in the characters. Honestly I didn’t hate this book. I’m really upset I didn’t love it because there’s so many great things about it. The writing was great and the world-building was phenomenal but I just couldn’t help myself from yawning while trying to continue. If this book sounds like your thing and you’re up for a slow paced but heavy on developed characters and world-building, I’d definitely still recommend this one. I’m usually a huge fan of high fantasy as well, so it may just be timing for me. I’m gonna put this down for now but I won’t say I won’t come back to it. Maybe picking it up at another time will be what’s best. Right now is just a big case of “it’s not you, it’s me. ” *ARC provided by the publisher for an honest review* Review can also be found on my blog!.. DNF @ 25%. Not because I didn't like it. But any time I put this book down, I am unabvle to get back into the story. I have to restart the book to keep me interested. And when you have to restart a book for the fourth time, it's sometimes easier to just put it down and never pick it back up. Feb 13, 2019 Emmy Neal The cover may LOOK action adventure, but it's really a f/f romance full of pastoral drama, land management, and the flawed socioeconomics of traditional fantasy. It's slow to start, but it pays off when those details come back to tie the worldbuilding together and make you laugh! Dec 08, 2018 Iris marked it as to-read Excuse me WHY was I not aware of this book??? It sounds absolutely AMAZING. I need it. Dec 10, 2018 Julie LOVED everything about this book: the voice, the world-building, the F/F romance, the characters! Mage Ladros is one of my favorites. A YA must-read for lovers of classic adult high fantasy. Everyone go read this book thank you bye. Feb 27, 2019 April Friends. I love this book. I love how it centers women. Women of all stripes. Queer women. Trans women. Ace and aro women. Bi women. Disabled women. Poor women. And through it all, a particular focus on the lives of women of color. All set in a high fantasy world where women and women’s experiences stand at the center. I got this book as a galley at a library conference and it was absolutely delightful. Highly recommend. Jun 06, 2019 ellie it was ok this felt like a second book in a series. it was somehow underdeveloped and too muddled in past moments that it dragged. so. much. my god. this dragged as much as an ox cart through a field. my brain hurts with the effort i made to like this because of the gay girls (i love them but they didnt save this book) Told over two timelines: Before and After. Before tells of a quest to save the king whilst After shows us what happens to heroes when they return to normal life. Interestingly it’s written in present-tense first person and past-tense third. Aug 13, 2019 Liz didactic af. Something about a world with only female knights flows okay but how she treats the diverseness of race and sexuality feels like she's trying to fit a quota and show how ~aware~ she is, it doesn't flow naturally. I became incredibly tired of reading all her pointed bits about HAIR. also the plot was terrible and cliche, I hate reading before/after stories every other chapter. It felt like I was reading a sequel to a book that was never written. Nothing HAPPENS and when it does, it didactic af. Nothing HAPPENS and when it does, it happens too fast. It's a slog to get through with little reward. I am not really impressed with EK Johnston as an author, based on reading some of her previous works, her work never really feels immersive for me, it feels like it's incomplete and missing true heart and storytelling. Like, this (including all of the diverse points she aims to hit) could have been GOOD in the hands of a much better author... I loved the premise of The Afterward (what happens after the quest to save the world? ), but it ended up not being what I was looking for. Olsa Rhetsdaughter is a thief who somehow ended up helping to save the world. Only, fame is the last thing she needs — thieves work in the shadows, and thanks to the spotlight of celebrity, she’s constantly getting caught. But what other choice does she have? She’s got no other marketable skills, and she’s not going to accept help from anyone, certainly not her I loved the premise of The Afterward (what happens after the quest to save the world? ), but it ended up not being what I was looking for. But what other choice does she have? She’s got no other marketable skills, and she’s not going to accept help from anyone, certainly not her ex-girlfriend, Apprentice Knight Kalanthe Ironheart. Kalanthe is still an apprentice, but saving the world sets her apart from the other knights-in-training. But she’s got bigger problems than the social isolation. First of all, Olsa (who she still loves) keeps getting arrested and Kalanthe keeps having to save her from the hangman. Secondly, knight school is expensive. When Kalanthe as a young girl decided she wanted to be a knight, she agreed that it would be paid for at a later date… through marriage. While women do marry each other in this world, it’s rare and whichever man offers for Kalanthe’s hand would likely be expecting children, posing a problem for our lesbian heroine. And Kalanthe’s much too honorable to run away. The Afterward centers on the relationship between Olsa and Kalanthe. The timeline alternates between the present day (after the quest) and flashbacks to the quest itself, during which Olsa and Kalanthe fell in love. It’s the sort of story I know a lot of people have been looking for — a fantasy novel with smaller, more personal stakes rather than world-saving quests. However, I’m just not a romance girl. Blame it on me being grey-romantic, but it takes a lot for me to actually care about romance plotlines or subplots. Oh, and on the topic of aromanticism, there was some language in The Afterward that I thought wasn’t super friendly to aro people. I listened to it as an audiobook so I don’t have any exact quotes, but it was something like Olsa saying that she has the capability to love, unlike some other people she describes as “hardened” and the like. Anyway, long story short, this was a more romance-centric than I was expecting, and that’s always a hard sell for me. Also… and look, this is totally my fault for not reading the synopsis throughly, but I’m not a big fan of forced/arranged marriage plotlines. I just find them really really stressful (again, hello to my own queerness! ). A lesbian protagonist having to marry a man to pay off her debt is super stressful to me, and it’s the sort of thing that makes a storyline difficult for me. Obviously everything ended up happily, but even knowing that it most likely would didn’t take away from the stress. Random sidenote, why are there so many forced marriage plotlines? Like I get they’re a historical (and modern) thing but I keep running into them in my fantasy novels… Let’s move on to worldbuilding. It’s sort of loosely sketched with the feel of a lot of “standard Medieval Europe” fantasies. I think it was supposed to be gender egalitarian and queer friendly, but I’m not sure it was 100% thought through. Like, if this is a gender egalitarian world, why does Olsa find it safer to wear men’s clothing when she’s living on the streets? And would a world friendly to queer people really require biological children? Perhaps its not meant to be a fully accepting and egalitarian setting, but I just felt like it lacked some consistency. I really love the premise of The Afterward, and it is well written. The relationship between Olsa and Kalanthe is well developed. The Afterward just isn’t my sort of book for numerous reasons. That said, I can easily see readers with different tastes loving it. Review originally posted on The Illustrated Page... Jul 14, 2018 What a wonderful homage to David Eddings. I loved picking out all the little references, and I'm sure I missed some even at that. My favourite was "Whose turn is it to do the cooking? " Sir Branthear asked, as the last tent peg was driven home. "Yours, " said Sir Uleweya, though I wasn't sure how she'd arrived at that conclusion. The story is easily understandable by someone who's never touched a David Eddings book, too, making it the best of both worlds. Although those people should really be What a wonderful homage to David Eddings. Although those people should really be ashamed of themselves, and rectify that situation as soon as possible. I think this book may have knocked A Thousand Nights from the top of my 'Novels by EK Johnston' list, which I didn't think was possible. It's just amazing. A fabulous read. Receiving an ARC did not affect my review in any way. She was afraid, I realised. My brave nearly–a–knight who faced her death as calmly as she faced her breakfast was afraid of falling overboard. I put my arm around her. "Come on, " I said. "Slowly, and together. " Finally, she leaned forward, and saw what I wanted her to see. We were just behind the bow of the ship, running north with a good breeze behind us. The ship leapt from wave to wave, moving forward at a fair clip[, certainly father than any horse. The sun was bright, which meant the water was the brightest blue, except where the shadow of the ship fell on it. Alongside the front of the ship were two or three bright pink creatures with sleek bodies and pointed faces, skipping along the surface of the water with us.... I looked back at Kalanthe. She was still smiling as she watched the dolphins play. Her face was almost golden in the sunlight, and the wind had worked several large locks of her hair out of the single braid she'd tied it back in this morning. She was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen, I realised, in this moment and in a hundred others. I wanted to remember her like this, if I had to lose her. I didn't want to lose her at all. I leaned into her, and she looked down at me. Then, because I was a thief, I stole a kiss... Feb 18, 2019 Elyse Won Paperback ARC from! This was my first E. Johnston book and I was thrilled when she dedicated it to David and Leigh Eddings! David Eddings was my first fantasy author and will forever hold a special place in my heart. But Eddings this was not. This sort of felt like his Elder Gods trilogy and those are the books I liked the least of Eddings' collection, they were his newest and written with his wife. I really liked the idea of the book but the structure was not good. We're Won Paperback ARC from! This was my first E. We're told what happened before and how the godsgem was stolen or retrieved from the Old Gods. Then the whole book we're taken BACK through that experience, hopping between BEFORE and AFTER and Kalanthe and Olsa's perspectives. It was very choppy and a little confusing. Why the preamble at the beginning when we're going to read about it anyway? Then there were the gods. There was no explanation about them! There were Old Gods, or at least one, and now there are new gods. That's about it. Where's the rich history of the gods? They weren't developed enough at all. We don't meet any, which is very UN-Eddings-like. Eddings gave gods personalities and histories, etc. I did like the world-building that was done. And the feminism, yo! There was essentially just two male characters who had any lines. Even the king didn't have any lines. And only one male actually served a purpose. Well, I guess the other did too but only to help set up one of the main females so things could work out for her. I did like the knights and how individual they were. LGBTQIA abound! I did adore Kalanthe and Olsa. And Terriam and Branthear. I wanted to get to know Erris more! Now I just want to go re-read David Eddings and see what Sparhawk is up to. :).. I'm having a hard time with rating this one, it is probably a 3. 5. There are such great things about it, but also structural problems that detract from the story. While this is a high fantasy, it is primarily a love story between a knight and a thief who are both female. Overall, I like their arc together, defeating all odds to try to be together, but the structure of the book is so odd that it's hard to figure out how they found their way together. There is a before and an after. There is third I'm having a hard time with rating this one, it is probably a 3. There is third person and first person and the first person is not always the same person and there is no markers to designate who it is. But the strange thing is I still liked the story, and the prose was elegant in many places, and there was one particular part of the book where there is a side character who is only there for a second but made such an impact on me that I am still thinking about this person. Overall, I think this one is worth a read, but it is slow and bounces around with a weird structure, but there are moments of greatness... (view spoiler) ["I don't need you, " Kalanthe said. She took a deep breath. "But, Olsa, I want you so much. I want you more than I have ever wanted anything in the whole world. Please, you have to trust me. " (hide spoiler)] Rep: lesbian mc, bi mc, black and brown characters, trans woman side character so basically what the hp epilogue should have been only w knights & thieves,,, I've been trying to figure out what to say about this novel. It's tough, because it's a different kind of beast altogether and when I try to explain it... It kind of sounds like nothing really happens. But that's not the case. This book is something really special. So let's give it a go. To start with, as you can gather from the book summary, this takes place after the great, epic battle to save the world. You do get some of that quest in flashbacks. However, rather than it being all enormous I've been trying to figure out what to say about this novel. However, rather than it being all enormous battles and deeds of derring do, etc. it's all very personal moments. Even the climax -- with it's excitement and danger and the defeat of the Old God -- is still firmly about the people involved and the bonds they've created. And it's beautiful. The Afterward parts deal less with quests -- though there is one -- and more with how real life intrudes even upon the hero. There are so many things that seem possible when you're dealing with the impossible on that quest, but somehow real life gets in the way when the danger is gone. And not in a soul crushing, this is a depressing book way. It's sad and melancholic and nostalgic in parts, but in a way that makes you think about real life and whether the barrier between your dreams and reality are really so huge. Like, as readers we can see spots where things could be fixed... But the characters are true to who they are and that's important. So Kalanthe needs to hold to her sense of honor so she can't just throw away responsibility for happiness. Olsa has pride so she could pull on her ties to other to get out of her fix, but won't... Though, I think, very realistically, much of her pride is rooted in her self esteem. You know, in that way where you tell yourself you can't ask for charity while also thinking that if they really cared maybe they'd understand and be helping anyway... but they don't because you are not as great as they are. Anyway, all these subtle and real feeling barriers in their lives and that way people in hard times don't see that there friends are also having trouble, sometimes. People often keep themselves so private in their hurts. And yet, with all of this, it is most definitely NOT one of those books where you want to drag everyone into a room and lock the door until they just freaking talk because that would fix everything. It's more a book where you hope that everyone can figure out how to stay true to themselves and also reach that happy place they so dearly deserve. Anyway, I don't know if I've described this well enough at all. I found it an utter joy to read. It made me think about the people in life and whether I'm paying enough attention. It made me think about myself and the troubles I've been going through and wondering if I were being needlessly private about some of it. It made my heart skip a beat here and there as I feared for Olsa and Kalanthe's happy endings. It made me love that adventuring party and the family they created. And yeah, part of the ending was pretty much a lovely fairy tale in it's own and could have been too neat... But I think it says that real life is where the happy endings come from. The epic quest may seem like the ultimate one, but, that's also where the traumas come from and -- like the regular populace in the book -- people forget to look for that part. They either ignore or frown upon heroes that don't stay looking heroic all the time afterwards, never looking for the why. The novel also does an excellent job of accepting diversity. Obviously diversity is big right now and a lot of books are addressing it. I feel like this tends to fall into two categories -- they either calmly accept it and that's just the way life is or they are championing and preaching and making sure you are darned educated! There is a place for both, but I prefer the former. I want to feel like the aspects that make me "diverse" and minority in this world are things no one should make a fuss about because I am as normal and valid as anyone else without having to change a thing. The Afterward creates a world like this. No one sneers at the lesbian relationship. No one raises a brow at a transgender knight. Female knights are just Sir X like every other knight. I like a world of acceptance because I want out world to be that way some day and I love that it can be so easily imagined. Surely if so many authors can imagine it that way, we can all make it be that way. Somehow, someday. (that other, more pushy approach to diversity rather reminds me that the world is awful and my chances for happiness are rather lower than that of some others) As a side note, darn, but I really want to know more about Giran! What does she do next? What amazing scholarly adventures was she on between her quest hint and her help at the end? I just get the sense that there is so much going in her mind and life! Side note two -- anyone else feel like there is definite commentary on academia here? Sexism, narrow points of views, ridiculous overly smart people (not Ladros and Giran, of course) and their stubborn -- sometimes hurtful -- debates, crushing student loan debt? Or maybe my grad school days make my antennae twitch at anything that seems like it could be referencing it..... Nov 27, 2019 retro did not like it Imagine reading the sequel to The Return of The King, with flashbacks to events in that book, but without having read Fellowship or Two Towers. Because they don't exist. And neither does Return of the King. Character building, where. Events that show (rather than tell) us the dynamics of the merry band of adventurers, how. Pathos and stakes and challenges to overcome, nah, maybe we'll vaguely allude to them in passing. The Macguffin was dealt with, that's all you need to know. Oh, and that Imagine reading the sequel to The Return of The King, with flashbacks to events in that book, but without having read Fellowship or Two Towers. Oh, and that romance subplot? Yeah, it happened off the page, with maybe a couple of pretty tame flashbacks to convince us it's True Love. That's this book: a generic fantasy world peopled by a diverse, mostly female cast let down by an absence of plot and no conflict that can't be resolved without a convenient deus ex machina or a brief chat. Nothing much happens for the first 2/3 of the book, then the romance plot between the thief and the by-the-books squire is abruptly resolved, the troublesome Maguffin is rendered no longer troublesome via the power of ~true love, and, voila, happy ending. Nothing is earned, not even the victory the events in this story are an aftermath to, because we're told the outcome from chapter one and the people winning it are flat and uninteresting ticks on the diversity bingo card. I get the appeal of stories where everyone is different degrees of good, I do, but when your only villains are Monotheistic Religion (in the form of the One God who is already defeated at the start of the book) and Male Authority Figures (aka a bunch of snotty mages who are pretty unanimously derided), and still you give your cast of diverse, non-cis, non-heterosexual ladies easy wins, it feels patronizing. Also, I get what the author was trying to do by representing different types of hair and hair care, but the fact that this book harps on who wears a headscarf and who does her hair in braids more than virtually anything to do with the quest or the gem or even the freaking Old gods/new gods conflict is an odd choice... Apr 06, 2019 Rayna The beginning of this book seemed quite promising. Kalanthe Ironheart, an apprentice knight and Olsa Rhetsdaughter, a street-smart thief, along with their five companions (four knights and a mage), go on a Quest to find the godsgem so they can defeat the evil Old God who torments all life in the world. The story is as much about what happens to the characters after they return home from completing the Quest as it is about what happens during the Quest. The narratives are separated into two The beginning of this book seemed quite promising. The narratives are separated into two timelines, with the chapters about the Quest (simply titled "Before") alternating with the chapters about the characters' actions in the present (titled "After"). Unfortunately, this narrative structure did not work. We already know from the very first chapter what the outcome of the Quest is because Johnston tells us that they succeed and they all survive. She even reveals many of the key events early on, and then rushes through those events when they unfold later on. Neither the Old God nor his minions come across as much of a threat. As a result there is no suspense, no mystery, no danger. This story may as well have been told in chronological order. It's not every day I find a book about dark-skinned female knights with a lesbian romance, so I really hoped I would like this. Kalanthe is lesbian and Olsa is bisexual, and they have frank discussions about their sexuality, which is great, even though Kalanthe is a pillow princess. But in the end, all the characters were quite flat with few traits to distinguish them from each other, excepting maybe Olsa. The knights are all kind, noble, brave, selfless, and apparently also flawless. Kalanthe is perfect. She is the best in her knight training. She's smart and makes all the right choices. Everyone she meets likes and admires her instantly. Her only flaw is how overly perfect she is; it's literally a running joke through the book. Giran is a Middle Eastern-coded character who helps the knights by giving them advice about how they can find the gem. She wears a head scarf. Kalanthe is fascinated by the fact that she wears one, and muses that she would find a scarf useful herself. Head coverings served a practical function in the eping sand out of your eyes and mouth, and keeping the sun off the back of your neck. Several knights in my training year wore them when they were at home, but not in the city as there was no need. I hadn't seen anyone other than Giran wearing one at the university, even though I had to admit, it was still pretty dusty here. I liked the feel of light fabric on my skin and the way the scarf would conceal my face from strangers, and wished that I could wear one, but it was not my culture, so it wasn't a choice I had. You can tell the author just learned the term "cultural appropriation" but she doesn't really understand what it means. First, there are thousands of different head and face coverings worn by people from various different cultures around the world; they were not invented solely by one culture. No singular culture owns a fucking head covering. Second, if you're travelling in the desert, it is absolutely a good idea to wear something to protect your head and face from the sun and sand. Nobody from a desert country is going to be offended by a foreigner wearing a scarf to prevent sunburns or sand inhalation. If you spend time in a country among people who are not your own and participate in their daily life and customs, generally they will expect you to dress like them. It's considered respectful. Heck, if you're a foreign woman in a Muslim country and you wish to visit a mosque (or probably anywhere else, really), you are required to wear a head covering even if you aren't Muslim. A little bit later in the book, when they are travelling through the desert in the south, the group learns there are some "zealots" there who are not from that region. The zealots are described as "interlopers who were living under some sort of bastardization of southern customs. " The zealots attack Olsa's group and Mage Ladros breaks their mage's spell, knocking her unconscious. The unknown mage was lying facedown in the sand. She'd probably have a mouthful of it when she woke up because she wasn't wearing a headscarf—of all the southern customs to not appropriate. How does the author not realise how stupid it is to deride the supposed appropriation of the head scarf at the same time as she points out how ridiculously impractical it is not to? This is made all the more absurd by the fact that this is a fantasy book, and there is no indication that this fantasy world's history mirrors real world history of racism, conquest, colonialism, and genocide, which is at the root of what makes genuine instances of cultural appropriation harmful in the first place. On the contrary, this book is racially diverse and ostensibly set in a place where prejudice based on ethnicity does not exist and is therefore not a hindrance to opportunity (although social class obviously is, which you can see from both Olsa's poverty-driven need to steal as well as the political marriages involving knights who don't have enough money to pay for their knight education and training). The magic system in this world makes no sense because nothing is explained; even the characters have no idea how it works. Why the fuck did the mages need to send ten of their people to get themselves killed casting protection spells over the godsgem instead of just keeping an eye on it? Was the gem going to disappear into thin air or something? The only thing that really made me uncomfortable while reading the book was this: One of the knights is an asexual woman who suffers a severe brain injury inflicted by demonic it forces her to become infatuated with a man. "Sir Terriam doesn't like men, or women, for that matter. It's common enough with knights that they even have a word for it: shield-wed. That's why it's so terrible. The magic is making her change who she is. " I've always hated speculative fiction stories in which the writer uses magic or technology to change a character's sexual orientation, there is no good reason to do this and it has nasty implications for homosexual characters in particular. But I don't like to see an asexual character be forcefully hetero-programmed either. I can't imagine why Johnston thought this stupid subplot was an okay idea... 3. 5 stars This is a book that had a great concept, but the execution didn’t quite work for me. I love how much queer representation there is, that this is about 2 girls who are in love, that this world is reminiscent of medieval times but trans people and all sorts of other queer people are commonplace. So overall, I do applaud what this book was trying to do. However, a lot of this story was boring details with very little conflict (everything that happened that seemed even remotely bad was solved 3. However, a lot of this story was boring details with very little conflict (everything that happened that seemed even remotely bad was solved almost immediately in a way that felt too convenient), and the flashback chapters did very little to add to the plot at all. Usually, when parts of a book are told from the past, it’s all adding up to some big reveal, but that wasn’t the case here. No secrets were being kept from the reader, so it all felt very anticlimactic. Also, I was expecting to be a lot more invested in the romance, but I found myself having a hard time believing that the 2 girls loved each other that much. We got to see so little of them together in the flashbacks, & especially very little of how their relationship grew into what it was at all. One minute they’re just friends and the next minute they’re kissing... E. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Black christmas movie 2006 online. Black christmas full movie online free. Is Black Christmas (2019) a perfect film? No. But is it the atrocious mess that people who haven't even seen it are claiming? No, not at all.
The truth is that Black Christmas is a very topical film that was clearly made by women, for women. And there's nothing wrong with that. Yes, in a few parts the social commentary felt a bit heavy handed. But guess what? The original Black Christmas also contains content regarding women being women that shocked audiences at the time with its frank, in your face nature.
This modern reimagining of Black Christmas has many nods to the original while still telling an original story. There's much social commentary to uncover about toxic masculinity, women sticking together instead of tearing each other down, etc.
It starts a bit slow, but the tension increases around the halfway point. Once the killer gets into the house, the movie kicks into high gear.
I saw this in a packed theater with people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. What I observed was that most of the men looked uncomfortable several times. Meanwhile, most of the women were so into this revenge fantasy that they cheered numerous times.
Overall, the audience was engaged. People screamed. People laughed. People shouted at the characters. Many, many viewers walked out humming, whistling, or singing the movie's catchy rendition of a classic Christmas song.
Those who feel threatened by a movie for calling out rape culture need to take a good long look at why they're upset. Those who've been hating on this movie just for being rated PG-13 are showcasing a completely disingenuous take on the genre as a whole. There have been many beloved horror films that were rated PG-13.
Yes, a few scenes were cut short to get a PG-13 rating. But the movie is still ultimately satisfying and a lot of fun. And those who demand an R-rated film will almost certainly get the original cut when the movie comes out on DVD.
Purists who are mad that this isn't a direct remake of the original need to give themselves permission to view this movie on its own merits. It doesn't mess up the original in any way. It's just a fun, topical take on the general subject matter that's a great fit for women who have embraced the Me Too movement.

This story of three homeless people finding a baby in the trash and their adventures locating the parents is more like a non-Miyazaki studio Ghibli film then your average anime. The characters are interesting and well thought out. There's mostly nothing here that couldn't have been done with live action but we would have missed the wonderful comic drawing that illustrates the personalities in a way live actors can't. The very loose character animation reminded me a bit of FLCL (Fooly Coolly) but without the hysteria.
With the buckets of holiday slop that gets foisted on us every year, who would have thought that a real holiday heart warmer would come from Japan. It's unfortunate that the typical anime audience isn't interested in this type of film and other people who might enjoy and be uplifted by this won't watch a subtitled film.
A couple of notes: Two reviews here are mistaken about the film. One, there is no "gay couple. There are three homeless people trying to survive winter together. Just because one is gay doesn't automatically make the other man gay. Anyway, the man, Gin, is clearly not gay. Second there is no scene of a gangster getting shot in the head. Something else happens but I'm not a "spoiler" so find out yourselves.

Will José choose to ignore her and stay safe, or will he risk his parole and help someone in need? The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant. It follows an American marijuana kingpin in England who is looking to sell his business, setting off a chain of blackmail and schemes to undermine him. The Gentlemen premiered at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema on December 3, 2019, [5] and was theatrically released in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2020 and in the United States on January 24, 2020, by STXfilms. It received mixed reviews from critics and has grossed $75 million worldwide. Plot [ edit] Big Dave, editor of the Daily Print tabloid, is snubbed by cannabis baron Mickey Pearson at a party and hires private investigator Fletcher to investigate Pearson's links to Lord Pressfield, a minor Royal with a heroin-addicted daughter. Fletcher offers to sell his findings (typed up as a screenplay entitled Bush) to Pearson's right-hand man Raymond for £20 million. Born in poverty in the US, Pearson won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where he began selling marijuana to privileged fellow students before dropping out and building up his criminal enterprise by violence. He plans to sell his business to American billionaire Matthew Berger for $400 million so he can retire peacefully with his wife Rosalind. Pearson shows Berger one of the labs where he grows his cannabis under the estates of aristocratic landlords, who need cash for the upkeep of their stately homes. Pearson is later approached by Dry Eye, an underboss for Chinese gangster Lord George. Dry Eye offers to buy out Pearson's business, but he refuses. Pearson's lab is then raided by amateur MMA fighters calling themselves The Toddlers who film their encounter defeating the lab's guards and stealing the marijuana before uploading it online as a rap video. The fighters' trainer, known only as Coach, orders them to delete the video and is horrified when he discovers that the cannabis belongs to Pearson. Pearson begins transferring his cannabis-growing out of the estates. He also agrees to bring home Pressfield's wayward daughter Laura. Raymond retrieves Laura from a council estate where she is living with several other addicts. However, in a brawl with her room-mates one of Raymond's men accidentally pushes Aslan, a young Russian man, out of the window to his death. Laura later dies of a heroin overdose. Coach visits Raymond, apologizes for his students' actions, and offers his services as penance. Coach has captured Phuc, a henchman of Dry Eye's who had informed Coach's crew about the lab location, although Phuc is accidentally killed during a botched escape attempt. Pearson threatens Lord George for going after his lab, and destroys one of his heroin labs in retaliation. George chastises Dry Eye for his insubordination in attacking Pearson and offering to buy him out; George nods to a henchman to execute Dry Eye, but the man executes George instead. Unknown to Pearson, Dry Eye is in league with Berger, who had wanted Pearson's business disrupted to reduce the price. Dry Eye has taken Lord George's place and still hopes to take Pearson's empire for himself. Dry Eye tries to kidnap Rosalind, who kills Dry Eye's men before she runs out of bullets in her 2-shot derringer. Raymond kills an assassin sent to kill Pearson; the two rush to Rosalind and Pearson kills Dry Eye as he is about to rape her. Fletcher ends his story and Raymond orders him to leave his house. Fletcher has merely confirmed Pearson's suspicions about the link between Dry Eye and Berger. Raymond orders Coach's students to capture Big Dave. They drug him and film him having sex with a pig, threatening to post it online unless he drops his investigation. Pearson and Berger meet up again in a frozen fish plant, actually a cover for Pearson's European distribution operation. Berger drops his offer to $130 million, but Pearson reveals his knowledge of Berger's plan, shows him Dry Eye's frozen body and tells him he is keeping his business. Pearson forces Berger inside a refrigerator, where he will freeze to death unless he transfers $270 million compensation and, for the assault on Rosalind, cuts "a pound of flesh " from his own body. Fletcher approaches Raymond again for his payment, but Raymond reveals that he was tailing Fletcher all along. The fighters have stolen his stashes of evidence after Raymond placed a tracker on him during their last encounter. Fletcher reveals that he has also sold info to Aslan's father, a Russian oligarch and former KGB agent. The assassin that Raymond earlier killed was one of the Russians. Coach kills two Russian hitmen sent to kill Raymond, while Fletcher escapes in the chaos. Pearson is kidnapped by two other Russians, but they are quickly ambushed by Coach's students who want to "solve Coach's problem". They assault the car with bullets, killing the Russians and allowing Pearson to escape. Later, Fletcher decides to pitch the story as a film to Miramax. After his meeting, he gets into a cab only to realize that Raymond is the driver. Upon learning of Fletcher's capture, Pearson and Rosalind return to their cannabis empire and celebrate in each other's company. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] It was announced in May 2018 that Guy Ritchie would direct and write The Gentlemen, a film that would be in the same spirit as Ritchie's earlier Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. The project was unveiled at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where Miramax acquired the distribution rights. [6] [7] Filming was expected to begin in October. [8] In October, Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, Henry Golding and Hugh Grant were cast, [9] [10] with Jeremy Strong, Jason Wong and Colin Farrell joining in November. Michelle Dockery also signed on, replacing Beckinsale in her role. [11] [12] [13] In December 2018, Lyne Renée was added as well. [14] Principal photography began in November 2018. [15] Filming locations included West London Film Studios and The Princess Victoria pub in Shepherd's Bush. [ citation needed] Release [ edit] In February 2019, STX Entertainment acquired U. S. distribution rights to the film from Miramax for $7 million. [16] The film had its world premiere as a VIP special screening at Curzon Mayfair on 3 December 2019. [17] It was theatrically released in the UK on 1 January 2020 and in the US on 24 January 2020. [18] The studio spent around $25 million on promoting the film. [19] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] As of February 19, 2020, The Gentlemen has grossed $32. 2 million in the United States and Canada, and $43. 3 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $75. 5 million. [3] [4] In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside The Turning, and was projected to gross around $10 million from 2, 100 theaters in its opening weekend. [20] The film made $3. 1 million on its first day, including $725, 000 from Thursday night previews. It went on to debut to $10. 6 million, finishing fourth at the box office. [19] It then made $6 million in its second weekend, finishing fifth. [21] In its third and fourth weekends the film made a respective $4. 2 million and $2. 7 million. [22] [23] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 73% based on 221 reviews, with an average rating of 6. 36/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "It may not win writer-director Guy Ritchie many new converts, but for those already attuned to the filmmaker's brash wavelength, The Gentlemen stands tall. " [24] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 51 out of 100, based on 44 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews. " [25] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported an average 3. 5 out of 5 stars, with 48% of people saying they would definitely recommend it. [19] Writing for Entertainment Weekly, Leah Greenblatt rated the film a "B-" and found it to come up short when compared to Ritchie's previous crime films, stating, " The Gentlemen is nothing if not a callback to the Locks of yesteryear, star-stacked and defibrillated with enough juice to jolt a gorilla out of cardiac arrest. " [26] Some reviews perceived the film as anti-Semitic, racist, homophobic and sexist on account of its portrayals of characters that fit stereotypes. [27] [28] [29] The Independent described it as "an equal opportunity offender" in its targeting of a multitude of minorities from Jews to East-Asians. [30] References [ edit] ^ "The Gentlemen (18)". I'm not one to come here to write reviews but after seeing all the reviews here I feel I need to add my opinion. The film starts out with High Grant sounding like a David Williams, little Britton hard man talking to Charlie Hunnam doing his best Tom hardy impression. This goes on for most of the film with some incredibly weak dialogue which really struggle to keep you interested. McConaugheys character is very similar to his character out of true detective which is fairly enjoyable but nothing new. Now the rest of the story has a few entertaining moments and Colin Farrell is great but there really isn't anything else to enjoy. The story is trying to be upto date but just shows how out of touch Ritchie really is and you can pretty much predict the whole story as it folds out. Also the less said about the movie script ending the better. I really recommend you skip this film and save you're money. I used a gift card and still felt like I got a bad deal.
